Annual Assessment Requirements & Registration
Please Note!
All SBAC testing for the 2020-2021 school year will be canceled per the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction.

Annual assessments are a requirement of all enrolled students as per WAC 392-121-182. Information on the Washington State Comprehensive Assessment Program may be obtained at the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction’s (OSPI) website at www.k12.wa.us/assessment.  For grade-specific assessments and other valuable testing information, please visit the State Testing Overview page on the OSPI website.
You can also visit Your Child's Progress for Washington State for helpful information.

Grades K - 2

The Smarter Balanced state test starts in 3rd grade. For grades K-2, an alternative method of assessment that measures a student’s academic progress each year is required. This can take the form of a portfolio assessment or other approved standardized assessment.

Option 1. Complete a Portfolio : Most families choose this option for their K-2 students. The portfolio directions and rubric for this option are included below. Please contact your individual teacher for the due date for your child's portfolio. This is a great opportunity to work with your child or children to talk about and celebrate their learning this year.

Option 2. Standardized Assessment: K-2 students are not old enough to participate in the state Smarter Balanced assessment. However, you have the option of using your Instructional Support Fund through OASIS to pay for a standardized assessment through the Family Learning Organization (FLO). Please register for the test here. These tests are mailed to you prior to your testing week preference. They are done at home and must be mailed back within two weeks or you will be charged by FLO for the materials. This late fee cannot be paid from your allocation.

Grades 3 - 11

All Washington State students in grades 3-11 MUST take the Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBAC) in Math and Language Arts. Students in grades 5 and 8 must also take the Science MSP. Once tests are completed, results will be provided to your OASIS teacher and mailed to the student’s address on file.

There are two options for fulfilling this requirement:

Option 1. Take the assessment with us in one of our testing locations.

(OASIS Assessment Calendar will be announced later in the year)

Option 2. Take the Smarter Balance in your local resident District.

         -  Testing will be conducted on whatever schedule that District is using but will be within the 2019/20 state testing window.

Practice Tests & Prep Resources:

Get comfortable with the format of the exam by taking the SMARTER BALANCED PRACTICE TEST.  For more information on preparing for the Smarter Balanced Assessment please visit the OSPI website at http://wa.portal.airast.org/students-and-families Or http://www.k12.wa.us/Resources/default.aspx.

NOTE: It is the goal of OASIS to have all students in grades 3-11 participate in the Smarter Balanced Assessment so both your teacher and our school can monitor your child's growth in reading, math, and at some grades in Science and adjust our program as needed. While we hope you do not refuse to participate, if you decide to refuse to participate you must complete the refusal form and choose an alternate form of assessment.
